Preposition কী?

English preposition rules, examples, and exercises for English learners

Preposition হলো এমন শব্দ, যা সাধারণত Noun বা Pronoun-এর আগে বসে এবং বাক্যের অন্য শব্দের সঙ্গে তার সম্পর্ক (সময়, স্থান, দিক, কারণ ইত্যাদি) প্রকাশ করে।

• The book is on the table. (বইটি টেবিলের ওপর আছে।)
• She lives in Dhaka. (সে ঢাকায় থাকে।)
• The class starts at 10 AM. (ক্লাস সকাল ১০টায় শুরু হয়।)
• He is going to school. (সে স্কুলে যাচ্ছে।)

Preposition-এর প্রধান ধরন

১. সময়সূচক Preposition

At, On, In সহজে মনে রাখুন

• At – ঘড়ির সময়: at 7 PM, at noon, at midnight, at night
• On – দিন/তারিখ: on Sunday, on 21 February, on Eid day
• In – মাস, বছর, ঋতু: in June, in 2026, in winter; দিনের অংশ: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening

বিশেষ নিয়ম: at night হয়, কিন্তু in the morning। আবার নির্দিষ্ট দিনের সকাল হলে on Friday morning।

Since বনাম For

• Since + শুরুর বিন্দু: I have known her since 2022. (২০২২ সাল থেকে চিনি।)
• For + সময়ের পরিমাণ: I have known her for four years. (চার বছর ধরে চিনি।)

By বনাম Until

• By = শেষ সীমা (deadline): Submit it by Monday. (সোমবারের মধ্যে জমা দাও।)
• Until = ওই সময় পর্যন্ত চলতে থাকা: I will stay until Monday. (আমি সোমবার পর্যন্ত থাকব।)

২. স্থানসূচক Preposition

In, On, At সহজে মনে রাখুন

• in – ভেতরে/এলাকায়: in a room, in Bangladesh, in a box
• on – পৃষ্ঠে: on the wall, on the floor, on the roof
• at – নির্দিষ্ট বিন্দুতে: at the door, at the station, at the office

৩. দিকনির্দেশক Preposition

To বনাম Into: to গন্তব্য বোঝায়, into ভেতরে প্রবেশ বোঝায়। The child is in the pool (অবস্থান), কিন্তু The child jumped into the pool (গতি)।

৪. এজেন্ট ও উপকরণসূচক Preposition

• by – কাজের কর্তা (Passive voice) ও যানবাহন: The letter was written by her. (চিঠিটি তার দ্বারা লেখা হয়েছে।) / He travels by bus. (সে বাসে ভ্রমণ করে।)
• with – যে উপকরণ দিয়ে কাজ করা হয়: She cut the cake with a knife. (সে ছুরি দিয়ে কেক কাটল।)

৫. কারণ ও উদ্দেশ্যসূচক Preposition

• for – উদ্দেশ্য বা জন্য: I bought a gift for you. (আমি তোমার জন্য উপহার কিনেছি।) / He works for a living. (সে জীবিকার জন্য কাজ করে।)
• because of / due to / owing to – কারণ: The match was cancelled because of rain. (বৃষ্টির কারণে খেলা বাতিল হয়েছে।) / He is absent due to illness. (সে অসুস্থতার কারণে অনুপস্থিত।)
• in order to / so as to (+ verb) – উদ্দেশ্য: We study in order to pass. (আমরা পাস করার উদ্দেশ্যে পড়ি।)

৬. সঙ্গসূচক Preposition

• with – I live with my parents. (আমি বাবা-মায়ের সঙ্গে থাকি।)
• along with / together with – The teacher came together with the principal. (শিক্ষক অধ্যক্ষের সঙ্গে এলেন।)

১০টি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম

নিয়ম ১: Preposition-এর পরে noun, pronoun বা gerund (verb + ing) বসে। যেমন: Thank you for helping me. / I am looking forward to meeting you. (এখানে to preposition, তাই meeting।)

নিয়ম ২: কিছু verb-এর পরে preposition বসে না। ✗ discuss about → ✓ discuss the problem; ✗ enter into the room → ✓ enter the room; ✗ reach at the station → ✓ reach the station; ✗ explain about the problem → ✓ explain the problem।

নিয়ম ৩: between সাধারণত দুইজনের মাঝে (বা আলাদাভাবে চিহ্নিত পক্ষগুলোর মধ্যে); among একটি দলের মধ্যে।

নিয়ম ৪: অবস্থান ও গতির জন্য আলাদা preposition: in the pool (অবস্থান) → jumped into the pool (গতি)।

নিয়ম ৫: Since + শুরুর সময়; For + সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য।

নিয়ম ৬: By = deadline; Until = ওই সময় পর্যন্ত চলা।

নিয়ম ৭: In time = যথাসময়ের আগে (We arrived in time for the class); On time = ঠিক সময়ে (The train left on time)।

নিয়ম ৮: যানবাহনে by (by bus, by train); তবে হেঁটে গেলে on foot।

নিয়ম ৯: Different from, similar to, married to, superior/inferior to।

নিয়ম ১০: বাংলা অনুবাদ দেখে preposition ঠিক করা যায় না। Wait for, listen to, depend on, agree with, talk to; সবই বাংলায় প্রায় একই শোনায়, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে আলাদা। তাই পুরো phrase মুখস্থ করুন।

4. The train leaves at midnight. – ট্রেন মধ্যরাতে ছাড়ে।
5. We go to Dhaka every Friday. – আমরা প্রতি শুক্রবার ঢাকায় যাই।
6. They lived in Paris for two years. – তারা দুই বছর প্যারিসে ছিল।
7. Classes are over by 4 p.m. – ক্লাস বিকেল ৪টার মধ্যে শেষ হয়।
8. The shop is open until 9 p.m. – দোকানটি রাত ৯টা পর্যন্ত খোলা থাকে।
9. I will finish this project within a week. – আমি এক সপ্তাহের মধ্যে প্রকল্পটি শেষ করব।
10. Turn off the lights at night. – রাতে বাতি নিভিয়ে দাও।
11. The cat is sleeping on the sofa. – বিড়ালটি সোফার ওপর ঘুমাচ্ছে।
12. The book is in the bag. – বইটি ব্যাগের ভেতরে আছে।
13. They sat near the window. – তারা জানালার কাছে বসেছিল।
14. The sun rises in the east. – সূর্য পূর্ব দিকে ওঠে।
15. Put the groceries into the cupboard. – মুদি জিনিসগুলো আলমারির ভেতরে রাখো।
16. Walk across the bridge to reach my house. – আমার বাড়িতে পৌঁছাতে সেতু পার হয়ে হাঁটো।
17. He ran towards the stadium. – সে স্টেডিয়ামের দিকে দৌড়াল।
18. The plane flew over the clouds. – বিমানটি মেঘের ওপর দিয়ে উড়ল।
19. The dog jumped off the couch. – কুকুরটি সোফা থেকে লাফিয়ে নামল।
20. The vase fell and broke on the floor. – ফুলদানিটি পড়ে মেঝেতে ভেঙে গেল।
21. The letter was written by Sara. – চিঠিটি সারা লিখেছে।
22. He wrote the essay with a pen. – সে কলম দিয়ে রচনা লিখল।
23. They travelled by train to Kolkata. – তারা ট্রেনে কলকাতা গেল।
24. We cut the paper with scissors. – আমরা কাঁচি দিয়ে কাগজ কাটলাম।

পরীক্ষার জন্য টিপস

1. At = বিন্দু, in = ভেতরে/বড় সময়কাল, on = পৃষ্ঠ বা নির্দিষ্ট দিন, by = সময়ের মধ্যে/যান/কর্তা, for = উদ্দেশ্য/সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য।
2. Preposition আলাদা না শিখে পুরো phrase (good at, depend on, married to) শিখুন।
3. প্রতিটি ভুল বাক্য মুখস্থ না করে সঠিক বাক্য দিয়ে নিজের উদাহরণ বানান।
4. Fill in the blanks-এ আগে verb/adjective দেখুন; অনেক সময় ওটাই preposition ঠিক করে দেয়।
5. পড়ার সময় বাক্যের preposition-গুলো দাগিয়ে রাখুন; এতে চোখ ও কান দুটোই অভ্যস্ত হয়।
